Websites
Last updated on September 27, 2009
Below are my "go-to" websites for information consumption - check out my Cloud Services page to see the websites that I rely on to get things done or my Alltop page for more sites I enjoy.
While the sites below are my favorites, they are just the starting point for discovering and consuming information online. The vast majority of the information I consume is brought to me through my social networks. Taking the time to develop your social graph with tools such as Twitter allow specific content to be hand fed to me from people I trust and am compatible with from an interest standpoint.
My current RSS workflow includes Google Reader via the Firefox plugin Feedly. I also use NetNewsWire's Mac desktop client for my "must read feeds" as well as Newsstand on my iPhone.
Business and Finance
| The Wall Street Journal - wsj.com |
|
| business and financial news | |
| The WSJ is my staple for mainstream financial and economic news. I have an online subscription and get the morning paper and news alerts sent to my email. It is the only site I consume through an email subscription. I find it the best way to keep abreast with the latest economic news. |
Tech and Web
| MacRumors - macrumors.com |
|
| apple news and rumors | |
| This is a site I couldn't live without. I am a Mac fanboy and am one of those people who pretty much buys it if it has the Apple logo on it. MacRumors always does a great job of getting the most recent developments in the Apple community out there. | |
| The Next Web - thenextweb.com |
|
| web company news and discussion - with a little humor mixed in | |
| A great spot to go to find web and tech news. I have followed the blog for a while and started blogging there in June of 2009. Check out my posts here. | |
| TechCrunch - techcrunch.com |
|
| web company and startup news | |
| This is where I go for news on web 2.0 companies and the startup in the space. It's a great resource to see who is getting funded and staying on top of what's the latest and greatest in the web world. Although some people love him and some people hate him, no-one can deny the TechCrunch empire that Michael Arrington has created. | |
| Mashable - mashable.com |
|
| web/social media news | |
| Along with TechCrunch and The Next Web, this is the other site I read on a regular basis to keep in touch with what's going on in social media. It is a little more consumer/entertainment oriented than TechCrunch but always has a bunch of great information. | |
| Techmeme - techmeme.com |
|
| tech news aggregator | |
| Techmeme is the authority in terms of flushing out the most significant and important tech news of the day. It determines stories partly based on algorithm and partly based on humans to ensure that the top stories make it to the homepage everyday. | |
| Startup Ticker - startupticker.com |
|
| startup and web company blog aggregator | |
| Startup Ticker is essentially a news feed that is comprised of only the blogs of startup and web companies. It's a simply way to follow hundreds of startups feeds instead of subscribing to each of them individually. | |
| Scripting News - scripting.com |
|
| web tech and content syndication discussion | |
| Dave Winer is one of the people I respect most when it comes to the web. He was the man behind RSS and has a pulse on what the future holds for content syndication. I love his straightforward and pragmatic way that he discusses these things on this blog. | |
| building43 - building43.com |
|
| business advice on how to best use the web/social media | |
| Robert Scoble has really put together a great site to offer practical advice and tips on how to utilize and implement web based technology and social media. What is great about this site is the variety of video interviews with people from the companies that are leading the way in this area. | |
| The Steve Rubel Lifestream - steverubel.com |
|
| insights into emerging tech, social media and how it's affecting marketing/PR | |
| Steve Rubel always has interesting and insightful things to say about social media and how it's affecting marketing and PR. In addition to this site, I've been following Steve and his great weekly column over at Advertising Age. |
Graphic Design
| Smashing Magazine - smashingmagazine.com |
|
| resources for web designers and web developers | |
| This is a great site that always has great tidbits of information about graphic and web development. It does a great job of providing tutorials in these areas. | |
| David Airey - davidairey.com |
|
| graphic design | |
| The graphic design I do is primarily brand development and logo design. David Airey, a professional logo designer, offers a bunch of great information on his process and his work in the field of logo design. | |
| Tuts+ Network - tutsplus.com |
|
| tutorials focused around specific design disciplines | |
| The Tuts+ Network is a group of sites that offers great information if you are a graphic designer or web developer. I am a huge fan of PSDtuts+, Vectortuts+ and Nettuts+ . I find it to be the most useful tutorial resource along with my Lynda.com subscription. |
Lifestyle
| Zen Habits - zenhabits.net |
|
| simplicity, productivity and health | |
| Great site for all things involving living a simple life, being healthy and productive and achieving your goals. Great site for getting you to look at everyday things in a different way. Always filled with useful tips. | |
| The Blog of Tim Ferris - fourhourworkweek.com/blog |
|
| lifestyle design | |
| Tim Ferris, the author of The 4-Hour Workweek, offers miscellaneous articles on the happenings in his life and the topics he is passionate about in his book. I am really enjoyed his book and have followed is blog since I read it. |
