Podcasts
Last updated on December 9, 2009
This may seem like a crazy amount of podcasts to keep track of but I actually do listen to all of these Podcasts on a weekly basis or at the frequency they are distributed. Podcasts have been my main source of entertainment and information since 2005. Whether I'm in my car, working out or at my computer, I always have these podcasts queued up and ready to go.
I listen to/watch every episode
I listen to/watch only select episodes
Mac
| MacBreak Weekly - twit.tv |
|
| apple news & discussion | audio only | weekly | |
| I've been listening to this podcast since the beginning. It's a great casual dialogue on the latest Apple news and rumors. I am a huge fan of Leo Laporte and have been watching him since his Tech TV days. MBW's weekly picks are also quite useful. | |
| Mac Geek Gab - macobserver.com | |
| mac troubleshooting how to | audio only | weekly | |
| A great show hosted by Dave Hamilton and John F. Braun that is in a question and answer format. It basically covers all tech stuff related to the Mac as well as some other non-Mac stuff. I learn a great deal and often find great tips from listening to this show. It's also useful to have all of the anecdotal stories that are covered on the podcasts as background knowledge that you can apply when you face a similar issue down the road. |
Tech
| this Week in Tech - twit.tv |
|
| tech news & discussion | audio only | weekly | |
| This is the show that got me hooked on podcasts. It's an entertaining talk show on weekly tech news. Another show I watch by Leo Laporte and his TWiT network. Leo does a great job of always mixing in cool guests including Kevin Rose and other major figures in the tech/web space. If you are looking for strictly a factual news based show, this is not it - it covers the news but also seeks to put an entertaining spin on it. | |
| Diggnation - revision3.com |
|
| tech news & discussion | audio & video | weekly | |
| I am a big fan of Kevin Rose since his Tech TV days. Diggnation is hosted by Kevin and his friend Alex Albrecht. It's an extremely entertaining show that features some of the top dugg stories of the week on digg.com. To get the full experience of the show you definitely have to check out the video version. | |
| Cranky Geeks - crankygeeks.com |
|
| tech news & discussion | audio & video | weekly | |
| An informative short format show (25 min) that is always pretty entertaining. I am a huge fan of John C. Dvorak and his cranky commentary on all things tech. You can also find Dvorak on regular appearances on Leo Laporte's TWiT network. | |
| net@night - twit.tv |
|
| web news & interviews | audio only | weekly | |
| Another great TWiT network show that is hosted by Leo Laporte as well as Amber MacArthur. It has also begun to include Sarah Lane as well. The show is broken down into two parts: commentary on the latest web news and new websites and then an interview from someone of significance in the tech/web world. The show always includes great guests. | |
| TED Talks - ted.com |
|
| talks across a variety of disciples | audio & video | weekly | |
| TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design and is an annual conference that started in 1984. The conference brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives/work or whatever else in 18 minutes. This podcast features all the videos from past conferences. If you want to be blown away, inspired or anything in between, check them out. | |
| This Week in Google - twit.tv/twig |
|
| cloud tech news | audio only | weekly | |
| A great new show by Leo Laporte and his TWiT Network. Leo along with Gina Trapani and Jeff Jarvis and other guests talk about Google but also a wide variety of cloud based topics. As a big user of Google as well as cloud based services in general, it's great to have an entertaining show like this dedicated to those issues. | |
| Buzz Out Loud - cnet.com |
|
| tech news & discussion | audio only | daily | |
| This is a great daily show to keep track of the latest tech news. Host Tom Merritt and many other rotating guests always offer insightful and entertaining banter about the news of the day. I don't generally have the time to listen to every 40 minute episode every day but I do listen to it most days. | |
| IT Conversations - itc.conversationsnetwork.org |
|
| interviews in tech | audio only | weekly | |
| This podcast is sometimes hit or miss in terms of the subject matter interesting me. However, the interviews that I am interested in are hard to beat. The hosts of the show are well versed in technology and always bring on great guests discussing big picture technology trends and issues. | |
| Spark from CBC Radio - cbc.ca |
|
| interview based show on tech & culture | audio only | weekly | |
| Spark is sort of an "NPR-ish" style podcast that doesn't get too technical but always offers interesting views on technology and it's effect on society and our culture. The host of the show Nora Young does a great job at extracting information and insights from those she interviews in a way that not too many tech podcasts can do. | |
| Evernote Blogcast - blog.evernote.com |
|
| discussion on all things Evernote | audio only | weekly | |
| I am a huge Evernote fan and use their service more and more everyday. It's the only company produced podcast I subscribe to. I really enjoy this show because it's put out by the people who run the company and not some PR people. In addition, they always discuss what's coming next to the service which really interests me as a hard core user. |
Startup and Entrepreneurship
| Venture Voice - venturevoice.com |
|
| interviews with entrepreneurs/VC's | audio only | monthly | |
| I'm a startup person and find this show quite interesting. It interviews entrepreneurs and VC's. The interviews always bring up great anecdotes and other useful information about the process of raising angel/VC money as well as the culture of entrepreneurship and startups. | |
| This Week in Startups- thisweekinstartups |
|
| interviews with entrepreneurs | audio & video | weekly | |
| I am a big fan of Jason Calacanis. This is a relatively new show but is off to a great start. It is a long show (2 + hours) but always has great guests and insight into entrepreneurship and startups. In addition to a weekly guest, the show also covers weekly tech news. | |
| Mixergy - mixergy.com |
|
| interviews with entrepreneurs | video only | daily | |
| Mixergy is a great daily show run by Entrepreneur Andrew Warner. Andrew streams the show live on USTREAM during the interview and then syndicates the show as a video podcast. The interviews are great because they always surface interesting anecdotes from some of the biggest entrepreneurs in the web/internet space. | |
| Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders - ecorner.stanford.edu |
|
| talks given by entrepreneurs | audio only | weekly | |
| This podcasts includes speeches and then a Q&A session from the who's who in technology and entrepreneurship. it's an amazing collection of speeches that are originally given at Stanford but then syndicated online. It's great that Stanford allows this content to be available to everyone online. |
Writing
| Creative Screenwriting - creativescreenwritingmagazine.blogspot.com |
|
| interviews with screenwriters | audio only | weekly | |
| An amazing podcast hosted by Jeff Goldsmith that interviews screenwriters in front of a live audience after their film was just screened. However, the interview covers not only the film that was screened but also the entire career of the writer including their breaking in story. Even if you're not a screenwriter, I think that this is a great podcasts to check out. | |
| Sam & Jim go to Hollywood - samandjimgotohollywood.libsyn.com |
|
| inside look at Hollywood screenwriters | audio only | bi-monthly | |
| A great story of two guys who leave their restaurant business in the midwest and move to LA with their families to pursue their dream of becoming staff writers on TV shows. It is extremely entertaining and informative show. It's been on hiatus for a little while but I hope they bring back the show at some point. |
New Age
| Theatre of the Mind - theatreofthemind.com |
|
| new age | audio only | bi-weekly | |
| A great podcast that explores the human mind through concepts such as consciousness, intuition, creativity, energy and psychology. Each episode features an interview with an expert in a field of study. My favorite episode #37; it's an interview with James Ray on the Laws of Attraction. |
