iPhone Software
Last updated on January 3, 2010
While I have hundreds of 3rd party apps and am constanlty experimenting with new ones, the list below is what I most actively use. I use my iPhone mostly for email, reading RSS and using the iPod.
Connect
| Facebook - facebook.com - free | |
| Facebook is probably one of the most polished iPhone apps out there. I actually prefer the mobile experience over the browser experience in accessing my Facebook account. The manner in which you interact with photos and other aspects of the Facebook experience is much better with the iPhone version in my opinion. | |
| Tweetie 2 - atebits.com - $2.99 | |
| This is currently my Twitter client of choice. I first started with Twitterific but moved to Tweetie when it was released. I have also played around with the TweetDeck iPhone client but I still prefer Tweetie over it. | |
| Socialcast - socialcast.com - free | |
| Socialcast is an Enterprise collaboration tool. I use this service as part of The Next Web's blogging team. This app is a great interface for the service when I'm on the go. | |
| foursquare - foursquare.com - free | |
| Foursquare is a great social networking service based on geolocation. It's a great service that allows you to know where are your friends are at any given time. The gaming aspect is also fun to play. | |
| Gowalla - gowalla.com - free | |
| Gowalla is currently the other major player in the location based social networking space. Although I first used foursquare, Gowalla is now the preferable location service that I use. |
Manage
| OmniFocus - omnigroup.com - $19.99 | |
| This is my project and task manager of choice. Although you can use OmniFocus as a stand alone iPhone app, the part I enjoy is the ability to sync my OmniFocus database between the Mac app and the iPhone app. I also use the Mac version of OmniFocus so I am never without access to my projects and tasks. Like the Evernote app, there are also a bunch of great location based services built into this app - including the ability to tell you what tasks are available to you depending on your current location. | |
| Squarespace - squarespace.com - free | |
| I am a huge Squarespace fan and love their service. This site is built on Squarespace and I couldn't be happier with it. Their iPhone app is great to post entries on the go or check out my site analytics. | |
| Mint - mint.com - free | |
| Mint is a great way to manage your money online. Basically you tie all of your financial accounts into your Mint account in order to have one central location to budget and manage your finances. This iPhone app is a great extension of the service as it provides a list of all your recent transactions across all of your accounts as well as updates on how your spending patterns are trending in comparison to the budgets you set for yourself. | |
| WordPress 2 - wordpress.org - free | |
| I blog for The Next Web and the site is built on Wordpress. This app great mobile interface to the popular open source blogging platform. I would never write a post using this app but if I ever have to make an edit to a blog post after it's published and while I'm on the go, I use this app. | |
| iPhlix - iphonevine.com - $2.99 | |
| This is a great app for managing your Netflix queue. It is really handy to have on the go. If someone mentions a movie that I haven't seen I am able to add it to my queue instantly - it eliminates the need to make a note of it on your iPhone's stickies or perhaps send yourself an email reminder. It's also a great way to search for movie information on the go as sort of a mobile version of IMDB. |
Information Capture and Retrieval
| Evernote - evernote.com - free | |
| Evernote is an amazing service. I have the premium account which is $5/month. Basically Evernote is a data capture tool that you can use anytime. All data is stored in the cloud. Evernote has apps on all platforms and so my data is always accessible -whether I'm on my Mac or my iPhone. The recent versions of this app are getting really exciting as it starting to add a lot of location based functionality. | |
| Instapaper Pro - instapaper.com - $4.99 for Pro Version or Free | |
| Instapaper does one thing and does it perfectly - marking and saving articles to read later. I have the browser bookmarklet installed so if I come across an article I want to read later I just simply "Instapaper it" and I have it ready to read later - both on my Mac or on the iPhone app. |
News
| Newsstand - omz-software.com - $4.99 | |
| I think Newsstand is the best RSS reader on the iPhone - and I've tried them all. What's great about this app is that it integrates which a bunch of other services including Instapaper and the most popular Twitter clients. It also allows offline reading and synching with Google Reader. | |
| BNO News - bnonews.com - $1.99 + a monthly subscription fee of $0.99 | |
| This is THE only source you need for breaking news. Unlike other news outlets who define "breaking news" loosely, BNO News just gives you the biggest stories in 140 characters. This iPhone app is great because it pushes you just the biggest stories. You can also follow BNO News on Twitter. | |
| ESPN ScoreCenter - espn.go.com - free | |
| This is a tremendously useful app that I use to keep track of sport scores. What's great about this app is that you can select your favorite teams so that their scores are filtered to the top above everything else. | |
| Twitscoop - twitscoop.com - $0.99 | |
| Twitscoop is a great complimentary app to Twitscoop's service for showing text clouds of Twitter trends. If I want to get a quick snapshot of what's going on in the world or if anything significant is going on, I'll pop open this app. |
Utilities
| 1Password Pro - agile.ws - $7.99 for pro version and $4.99 for standard version | |
| I have used this app on the Mac for a while and snatched up the iPhone app when it was first released. I don't use this app to auto-fill logins while browsing like I do with the Mac client. I use this app for the moments when you need an account number or password on the go that I might not otherwise have with me. | |
| Boxcar - boxcar.io - $2.99 ($0.99 per added push alert service) | |
| Boxcar is an amazingly useful app to get alerts pushed to my iPhone. I have it setup to get alerts for Facebook, Twitter and a couple different Twitter searches. |
Reference
| TomTom - iphone.tomtom.com - $99 for the US & Canada Version | |
| I have been waiting forever for this app and snagged it immediately when it was released on August, 16, 2009. It is a great turn by turn solution for car navigation and haven't seen any other solution that can touch TomTom in this space. | |
| iWiki - comoki.com - $1.99 | |
| I am always out somewhere and find the need to look up something in Wikipedia. This app allows me to quickly navigate and get to the content I am trying to find. Although there are free Wikipedia iPhone apps out there I find this pay app to be the best. | |
| WordBook English Dictionary and Thesaurus - trancreative.com - $1.99 | |
| Like Wikipedia, looking up a word in a dictionary or thesaurus is something I often do on my iPhone. Again, there are many free dictionary and thesaurus apps out there but this one is the best in my opinion. What's unique about this app is the ability to have words spoken to you. | |
| The Weather Channel Max - weather.com - $3.99 | |
| This is the pay version of The Weather Channel's iPhone app. Unlike the free version, this version doesn't have ads (which helps load times) and also provides additional customization like the ability to select what information you would like to set as your home screen. It also provides tide data which is not available on the free app. I have tried a lot of weather apps and this one is by far the best. | |
| The World Factbook '09 - jdictionary-mobile.com - $0.99 | |
| This is a great reference app for finding out any basic information you want on any country. In addition, all of the content in this app is specifically formatted for the iPhone. | |
| Cocktails+ - cocktailsapp.com - $2.99 | |
| This is a very useful app that has over 2,000 drink recipes. When I'm making a drink or at a bar and want to try something new, this is a great app to have. | |
| Yelp - yelp.com - free | |
| Yelp is a great service that I often use when I am traveling. It's a great resource for restaurant and hotel reviews as well as getting the inside information that you will never find in a traditional guidebook. | |
| AroundMe - tweakersoft.com - free | |
| AroundMe is an app that I use all the time to find gas stations, restaurants and anything else I'm looking for around my current location. |
Music / Sound
| Pandora - pandora.com - free | |
| I have a Pandora One subscription and I am a huge Pandora fan. Having the Pandora One subscription is actually key because the audio comes through at much higher bitrate. Like a couple of the other iPhone apps that I use, I actually prefer the iPhone experience over the browser experience. | |
| Ambience - urbanapps.com - $4.99 | |
| This is probably one of the slickest iPhone apps out there. After you buy the app, you have unlimited access to all of the exclusive Ambience sounds. I use this sometimes to fall asleep to - what's great is that you can set a timer and have the app automatically quit after the timer goes off. | |
| Midomi - midomi.com - $4.99 | |
| This has the functionality that the popular app Shazam has but with some added abilities. I had previously used Shazam until I found this app. In addition, the song recognition feature is a lot faster than Shazam. |
Images
| Photoshop.com Mobile - photoshop.com - free | |
| Photoshop free mobile app is a great app to make minor edits when on the go. The app also allows you to upload your photos to your photoshop.com's account. | |
| ColorSplash - juxtaposer.info - $1.99 | |
| ColorSplash is a really cool app for turning a photo to black and white and then selectively colorizing only certain parts of the photo. The app is really fun to use and also creates some quite compelling and interesting looking photos. The photos can be saved on the iPhone or immediately uploaded to a social network. | |
| CameraBag - nevercenter.com - $1.99 | |
| CameraBag is a great tool to use if you are on the go and want to apply a variety of simple effects to your photo. For the average person who just wants to do some quick and fun things with their photos this is a great app. | |
| iFlashReady - iflashready.com - $0.99 | |
| This is a great app to have if you take photos on your iPhone. Since the iPhone doesn't have a flash it is prone to taking underexposed photos. This app solves that problem by offering the ability to overexpose your photos in varying degrees. |
