This post appeared orginally on The Next Web - please share from there. If you love all things The Next Web make sure to grab your early bird tickets to The Next Web Conference in Amsterdam (April 27, 28 & 29).

This week saw a couple of big announcements relating to the real time web including WordPress' support for the PubSubHubbub protocol as well as Twitter's opening of the firehose to a new group of companies. The official iPad release date was also announced as well as rumors of an upcoming Google Tablet. Some big news also came out of the US this week relating to startups and keeping their founders in the US with the proposed Startup Visa.

Real Time Web
Blogging took a big step forwarding in becoming real time this week as Wordpress announced that all 10.5 million blogs have now gone real time by supporting the PubSubHubbub protocol. Twitter, the leader in the real time web discussion, also announced this week that they would be opening up their firehose to a variety of new companies (what this means). This announcement comes at a time when Twitter reached a key milestone of 10 billion tweets.

iPad
It became official this week that the iPad will be available on April 3rd with pre-orders starting on March 12th (get the official 'I am buying the iPad' countdown button). If you're trying to figure out which iPad is right for you, check out our analysis here. This week also saw Apple go after HTC and Google with a patent infringement lawsuit surrounding multitouch, a key selling point of Apple's iPad. Rumors also surfaced this week that Google as well as Sony are working on tablets to compete with the iPad.

US Startup Visa
A very important piece of legislation was recently introduced in the United States that aims to allow entrepreneurs who are not US citizens to stay in the country if they meet certain criteria. You can support this cause by installing this widget, calling your state's representative or sharing this video.

This week tech pundits had a field day predicting how Facebook's mega patent of "the news feed" will effect the web and the social media sites we all use everyday. This week also saw Twitter reach a statistical milestone and close a major deal with Yahoo.

Facebook Patents "the feed"
The biggest news this week came out of left field when Facebook was granted a patent that they filed for back in 2006. The patent (covered in detail here), essentially claims ownership over what we take for granted on almost all social networks today - the news feed. What remains to be seen is just how Facebook plans to leverage this patent and enforce it. Many believe that we are set to see some ugly legal battles in the coming months surrounding this patent. Taking a backseat to this news but likely just as significant was Facebook's announcement that they were expanding the Facebook Credit system in order to bring microtransaction features into more apps.

Twitter Yahoo Deal & New Stats
This week saw a bunch of miscellaneous Twitter news. The biggest was the announcement of a deal between Twitter and Yahoo that will integrate Twitter into Yahoo's various properties. The other major news was that Twitter's long awaited advertising platform will likely launch within the coming month. The advertising news came on the heels of new Twitter statistics that revealed nearly 75,000,000 people visited Twitter worldwide in January and are tweeting at a rate of 600 tweets per second. This week also saw some big names join Twitter including the Dalai Lama and Conan O'Brien.

This week Microsoft unveiled its long awaited mobile operating system called "Windows Phone 7 Series". The mobile landscape also changed this week as Google Android picked up AIR and Flash support. However, Steve Jobs remains adamant about not supporting Flash on the iPhone as well as the upcoming iPad. Also this week came a silly but important site that serves as a reminder about the risks of using geolocation services.

Microsoft Unveils the Windows Phone
On Monday, Microsoft announced their new and improved mobile operating system dubbed "Windows Phone 7 Series". Beyond what many believe to be a poor name choice, the features look quite impressive. While Microsoft does have some catching up to do, initial reactions have been positive. Perhaps one of the biggest questions people have regarding the OS is its ability to multitask. Although details on this as well as others are uncertain, more info will be released in the coming weeks. Phones with Windows 7 Phone Series are slated to be released by Christmas.

Battle Over Flash
This week Adobe announced that the new version of Flash Player (version 10.1) as well as AIR will be supported by Google's Android OS. This news is sure to anger many iPhone users who often cite no Flash support as their top complaint. In spite of this, Steve Jobs is not backing down on his stance against Flash. He recently had some harsh words for what he called a "dying technology". It will be quite interesting to see how the future of Flash plays out. While Google supports it on Android, they are also the biggest proponents of HTML5 (its potential killer). Meanwhile, mobile heavyweight Apple doesn't support Flash on its iPhone as well as the upcoming iPad. As long as Apple continues to lead the way in the mobile space, their position on Flash will likely carry the biggest weight in the marketplace.

The Risks of Social Media Location Sharing
This week a site called Please Rob Me was released that attempted to warn people about the risks of using geolocation based services such as Foursquare. The site shows people who are checking in on location-based services (and are thus not home). While the site is a little silly it does bring up valuable attention to the issue of privacy and safety when using geolocation services. This concern will certainly increase when Facebook introduces geolocation check-ins to it's 400 million plus users. Not only that, but Facebook users often have their physical address in their profile. All in all, a good reminder to be aware of the risks of geolocation.

Here is my summary from February 14th, 2010. Please share this post from The Next Web.

This week's news was dominated by Google Buzz. Google's latest product offering aggregates your activity across your social networks and brings the stream of activity inside Gmail.

Google Buzz

The week started with rumors that Google was introducing a Twitter or FriendFeed like service within Gmail. Dave Winer was quick to point out things that were needed if Google's creation was to truly be a "Twitter killer". On Tuesday, Google officially announced a new product called Google Buzz.

The announcement was followed by a flood of commentary on how Google's entry into the social space was going to effect companies like Facebook and Twitter. Alex had a great post discussing these very issues. While the initial positive reaction is great news for Google, Martin explores the potential identity issue that Google Buzz faces. How do you feel about Google Buzz? Vote here.

After the initial excitement had passed, many quickly became concerned over more noise in one's inbox. Google responded to these complaints noting that it would not be removing buzz from Gmail. Google has been quick to react to feedback however as they have already addressed a concern about Buzz regarding privacy issues.
This week saw a couple of big deals involving Monster and Yahoo as well as UStream. It also saw the battle over mobile heat up. Android's platform is gaining features and more phones. The big question mark in the space, Microsoft, appears to be poised to release a mobile phone soon. This week also saw Facebook turn 6 and get an improved UI. Meanwhile, Twitter added a key new feature to their web interface.

Battle Over Mobile
New stats reveal that world Smartphone shipments are up 39% year over year. For Apple, who released the latest version of their iPhone OS this week, iPhone sales account for an estimated 54% of their total stock price compared to only 21% for Mac sales. Google's Android platform is gaining steady adoption and this week pushed out an update on the Nexus One that brought long awaited multi-touch to the device. Samsung also released an Android 2.1 device. Meanwhile, everyone is still waiting to see how Microsoft plans to play in this market. The Zune Phone is rumored to arrive this Month.

Facebook Turns 6, Gets a Facelift
On Thursday Facebook celebrated is 6 year birthday and also announced that it had reached 400 million users. In this interview this week, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg revealed that a whopping 175 million people log onto Facebook every single day. This week also began the rollout of the new UI that is being gradually released to users as well as a handy new image uploader. Meanwhile, a rumored email product called "Project Titan" appears to be in the works.

Twitter Features, Attack and Stats
This week Twitter introduced "hovercards", a quick way to see a user's info without having to visit their profile. Many users were also required to change their password due to a phishing attack. Users who used the same login info for a torrent site had found their accounts compromised. Meanwhile, a study by Pew Internet found that while 73% of teenagers were "avid" on social networks only 8% use Twitter. While perhaps this is cause for concern, this visualization of Twitter's amazing growth is anything but.

Below is my recap from Sunday, January 31, 2010. Please share this post from The Next Web.

This week's news was dominated by Apple's iPad announcement this past Wednesday. Steve Job's unveiling of the iPad was well received by some and left others disappointed. Below I recap the speculation at the beginning of the week, a run down of the specs that were announced on Wednesday as well as the reactions to all the news.

The Anticipation
Monday brought us the last couple days to speculate about what the Apple tablet, or whatever it was to be called, was going to look like and the features it was going to have. It was our last chance to dig up internal memos, speculate about possible designs such as this and this, and discuss the profound implications of the unreleased device. The excitement reached astronomical levels the day before the announcement when Job's had some very positive comments to say about how Apple's upcoming products would positively effect Apple's bottom line in 2010. The one solid piece of information that did come out before the announcement was due to a slip up by McGraw-Hill’s CEO who confirmed the device would run iPhone applications. All of this pre-announcement hype caused us to take a look back at how Apple rumors start and how to manufacture them.

The Big Day
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010...the day that many had been waiting years for was finally here. The excitement reminded me of the original iPhone announcement. Live bloggers from around the world were ready to see what Job's was about to reveal. What Job's revealed was the iPad, a 9.7″ touch screen tablet device. Check out Martin's great summary of specs, models, apps available, pricing and availability. Also make sure to watch the official iPad Keynote video as well as Apple's iPad promotional video.

The Aftermath
For some, like our man Alex, the iPad was a big "iLetdown". In his reaction he goes through his laundry list of iPad complaints including pricing, storage capabilities and lack of multitasking among many others. While I agree with many of Alex's complaints, the iPad does remind me of the original iPhone which was too expensive to become a mass market device and also lacked many standard features when it was launched (such as copy and paste). The one big thing that I do agree with Alex on as being a complete fail is the lack of Flash support. For a device clearly positioned for consumption, the lack of Flash support and inability to watch things such as Hulu is somewhat confusing to me and many others. Sure, the promise of HTML5 will make this a non-issue eventually but that doesn't solve our problems when the iPad is released in March.

This week saw a bunch of Twitter news including the launch of a new Suggested User List as well as local based trends. They also announced an upcoming feature to claim dormant usernames. All wasn't good for Twitter as disappointing December growth rates were released. Also in the news was Apple after the long awaited Tablet announcement was officially scheduled for this coming Wednesday the 27th. The Google China drama also continued this week as the US Government stepped in.

The Next Web Podcast: Episode 7
Check out this week's podcast where we discuss Twitter's new Suggested User List as well as their plans to release dormant usernames, rumors that Bing could be replacing Google as the default search provider on the iPhone, a spoof political site that has become one of the biggest political sites in the world, some more ranting about FarmVille and much more.

Apple's Event on January 27th
After months and months of rumors and speculation, everyone will finally get to see what Apple's tablet is all about. This Wednesday Apple is holding a press event in San Francisco. Although the release date of the tablet is uncertain, it will be nice to finally see what the product is about and stop the perpetual cycle of rumors about the design or the possible data connectivity the device will have. Also expected to be discussed at the event is iPhone 4.0, which is expected to have the ability to run apps in the background as well as system-wide multi-touch.

Twitter News
This week Twitter had a couple of significant announcements. The biggest was the launch of a new and "improved" Suggested User List that now splits up suggested users into categories. The list has had criticism since it was launched and this will likely not silent those complaints about it being somewhat elitist and unfair. Twitter also launched and announced two other features. They launched geo-specific trends (why it matters) and announced an upcoming feature to claim dormant usernames (also check out TwitterCounter's new username claiming feature released this week). In other Twitter news, we had the first tweet from space (yawn) as well as the world's richest man, Bill Gates, join Twitter (and start a blog). While all great news, Twitter's growth rate figures for December weren't as positive.

Google vs. China
Last week was filled with reports about Google's potential exit from China following an alleged attack by the Chinese government to seize emails from human rights activists within China. This week the drama continued as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called out to China urging them to investigate the attacks and also denouncing Chinese Internet censorship. China was quick to respond to Clinton letting her know that her comments could harm Chinese - US relations. President Obama was quick to support Clinton's remarks and call out China for their censorship. How this situation plays out is yet to be seen but for now Google is staying in China.

You could be giving a presentation and don't want your screen to dim or you could be doing work around the house and don't want to have to wake up your computer in order to see if you have any new email. For moments like this I rely on the free app Caffeine by Lighthead Software.

Caffeine is a great free Mac app that I use everyday. Clicking it prevents your Mac from automatically going to sleep, dimming the screen or starting screen savers.

This week saw the possibility of Google leaving China, less than stellar initial sales results from Google's Nexus One phone as well as donation technology becoming a big part in raising money for the Haiti relief effort.

The Next Web Podcast: Episode 6
Check out this week's podcast where we discuss China's firewall, whether Bing is losing its luster, more Apple tablet rumors, Android news, Cokes new social media push, a cardboard computer that actually works and some Facebook news. As always, we also discuss and bring our perspectives to local tech issues from around the world.

Google To Leave China?
Google has always had a shaky relationship with China. In order to serve the Chinese market, Google has had to sacrifice some of its core values by censoring search results. While not ideal for Google, the alternative of ignoring China's billion plus population was a business decision they could not make. This week however, that position may have changed. A cyber attack seeking to grab emails of human rights activists is thought to have been conducted by the Chinese government. In reaction, Google stated that there were going to stop censoring Chinese search results and if China didn't approve they were going to leave the country. Ironically, China censored Google's announcement on the censorship attempting to hide the debate from its citizens. We'll keep you posted how this one plays out. For now, the US Government is staying out of the drama.

Nexus One Progress
Although Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak confessed that he loves the Google phone, the initial sales results have been less than stellar with Vodafone selling more UK iPhones in a day than the Nexus One sold worldwide in a week. It was also announced that Android updates have to pass Google’s review teams? That sounds App Store-ish and is sure to upset devoted Android users who love the fact that the platform is open.

Technology used to Support Haiti
The tragedy in Haiti has been all over the news recently and many have turned to technology and social media to support the effort. The most popular method people have been using is mGive. The service allows you to donate to support the Red Cross Haiti relief effort by simply texting HAITI to 90999 to give $10. The donation is then simply added to your mobile phone bill. As of a couple days ago, the text donation effort has pulled in over $4 million.
